Does anybody have any idea?
As a cosmetic dermatologist, I would not recommend dermaplaning for individuals taking Accutane (isotretinoin). Here's why:
Accutane is a powerful oral medication used to treat severe, cystic acne. It works by reducing the production of sebum, the natural oil produced by the skin. While Accutane is highly effective in treating acne, it also causes significant changes in the skin, making it more sensitive and prone to irritation.
Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation technique that involves using a sterile, surgical-grade scalpel to gently scrape off the outermost layer of the skin, removing fine vellus hair (also known as "peach fuzz") and dead skin cells. This process can be beneficial for some individuals, as it can improve the texture and appearance of the skin, and allow for better absorption of topical skincare products.
However, during Accutane treatment, the skin is already in a fragile and compromised state. The combination of Accutane and dermaplaning could potentially cause further damage, leading to increased sensitivity, inflammation, and even worsening of the acne condition. The risk of developing adverse reactions, such as redness, peeling, and even infection, is significantly higher for those undergoing Accutane treatment.
Moreover, Accutane is known to increase the skin's photosensitivity, making it more susceptible to sun damage. Dermaplaning, which removes the protective outer layer of the skin, can further exacerbate this issue, increasing the risk of sunburn, discoloration, and other sun-related skin concerns.
It's important to note that Accutane treatment can take several months to complete, and during this time, the skin's condition may fluctuate. What may be safe and beneficial at one point in the treatment may become contraindicated at another. Therefore, it's crucial to closely follow the guidance of your dermatologist and avoid any procedures or treatments that could potentially compromise the delicate balance of the skin.
Instead of dermaplaning, I would recommend focusing on gentle, non-abrasive skincare routines during Accutane treatment. This may include using a mild, non-drying cleanser, a hydrating moisturizer, and broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the skin from UV exposure. Speak to your dermatologist about other safe, effective options for improving the appearance of your skin while on Accutane.
